Wheel bearings are made of high quality steel and are built to last 100,000 miles or more if properly cared for. The bearings have two very important jobs: First, they allow the wheel to freely rotate with as little friction as possible. Second, they support the weight of the vehicle.
Even though wheel bearings are relatively simple, they need to be in near perfect condition to do their job. The bearings get packed with heavy grease to lubricate and protect them. It is when the seal that protects them starts to leak that the grease can become contaminated causing the wheel bearings to overheat and ultimately fail.
The signs that there are problems with your wheel bearings are:
- Unusual noise coming from the wheel (chirping, growling, rumbling, and/or a repeating sound)
- Noises from the engine get louder or even disappear as your vehicle’s speed changes
Wheel bearings that are factory-sealed cannot be serviced. Unfortunately, the entire bearing has to be replaced.
However, for bearings that are not sealed, our technicians can remove, clean, and inspect the bearing to ensure they are working properly. If your wheel bearings can be serviced, your owner’s manual will recommend how often you should have them checked- this is often around every 30,000 miles.
It is important to have wheel bearings serviced on their regular schedule. If they are not taken care of, the wheel can literally fall off of the vehicle. So be sure to ask your service manager at Cunningham’s Automotive Repair about your vehicle’s wheel bearings scheduled maintenance.
